As well as its real estate, Emilia-Romagna is also very appealing for its cuisine – Parma ham, spaghetti Bolognese Parmesan cheese, Mortadella cheese, balsamic vinegar, fettuccine, tortellini and lasagne. Then throw into the mix Ferrari and Maserati sports cars.
One of Italy’s largest and most prosperous regions, Emilia-Romagna lies between central and northern Italy, bordered by Veneto, Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria, Tuscany and Le Marche, meaning nearly a third of the regions of Italy are within easy reach.
But if you are taking a serious look at homes for sale in Italy, there are enough attractions within its borders that make buying property in Emilia-Romagna a very attractive proposition. One is its 70-mile coast, with Rimini, the most popular sea resort on the Adriatic shore.
Inland, Emilia-Romagna houses a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces and architectural gems. There is beautiful Bologna, renowned as a hotbed of political activism but also down the centuries a great centre of learning.
Europe’s oldest university is to be found here, dating back to 1088, and its alumni include Dante, Copernicus and Petrarch. It is also famed for its architecture, this being a city of memorable colonnades and arcades that give it an elegant, appealing air.
All of the city’s sights lie close enough to one another to be taken in on foot. The heart of Bologna are its two squares, Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno in the city centre. As well as chic boutiques, the piazzas also house the 16th-century Neptune Fountain, Bologna’s symbol.
Piazza del Nettuno also has a poignant photo memorial to its partisans who were murdered by fascists during World War II. For a truly stupendous view over the city, climb nearly 500 steps to the summit of the medieval Torre degli Asinelli. It is one of Bologna’s two historic leaning towers, the other being the Garisenda.
In Ravenna, the majestic basilicas are an ever-present reminder that for centuries this was part of the Byzantine Empire. Today it is a Unesco World Heritage Site and home to a vast array of artistic treasures.
Many people who buy real estate in Emilia-Romagna opt for its historic cities or the coast. Yet this is a vast region that includes the sprawling plains of the Po Valley, meaning farmhouses are also very popular with investors.
To the south of the region lie the ski resorts of the Apennine mountains, another reason for buying property in Emilia-Romagna.
